The initial hiring of Dr. Topping as academic dean was a significant factor in my decision to enter the seminary for Archdiocese of Edmonton. He was an obvious asset to the college for the two years that spent there. With his dismissal and the appointment of the current president I will think twice before recommending the college in the future. Very disappointing decision. |

I have known Dr. Topping for several years now and found him always to act with integrity to both live and teach the faith. His presence at NTC greatly aided in the attraction of many young people and my openness to the possiblity of sending my own children there to further their education. |

I’m extremely disturbed and disappointed that a good man like Dr. Ryan Topping (a man with 10 kids and a wife to support) would be fired for no particular reason.
I’m praying that justice would be brought to Dr. Topping, please bring him back to Newman Theological College.

Dr. Ryan Topping is a true man of faith who was influential in providing true authentic Catholic education and reforming Newman Theological College. With your decision to fire a father of many children, you are leading others away from an important education. I know countless families whose children have reconsidered Newman after your decision to fire a holy man. This portrays a scary precedent for our catholic faith and for this diocese if being catholic, adhering to our catholic traditions and teaching well leads to getting fired. Shame on you. I thought you wanted to reform Newman from the heresy that it taught in the 70s-00s. With this move, you are showing that you want our Catholic education to go back to teaching heresy. my grandmother took a course at Newman in the early 2000s that she had to drop because the professor was teaching contrary to the magisterium. Do not let us go back there, bring back Dr. Ryan Topping. |

I am so very disappointed with this turn of events regarding Dr. Topping’s seemingly unjust dismissal. I had such high hopes for NTC and the future of our Catholic community! I have many questions for those involved in this dismissal. I hope that it all comes to light and that justice may be served. |

We absolutely wish to see an orthodox Catholic in the role of president of Newman. Our Catholic community requires more education options that we can trust to be truly and wholly Catholic. |

I attended the 2023 Faith and Reason Seminar at the Newman Theological College. I experienced Dr. Topping as a capable leader who cares deeply about the Catholic intellectual tradition. I don't know if there were machinations behind his recent termination, but from the outside, this decision seems detrimental to the Catholic community. We should be oiling our bright lamps rather than snuffing them out ... |

I'm greatly concerned with the actions that Newman College has taken with the dismissal of Dr. Topping. Through his work and promotion of the college I was so encouraged to see a Catholic institution in Edmonton. However with his dismissal it brings into question if the college is actually choosing to promote a Catholic identity and if this is an institution we would want to support and have our students attend. |

What an utterly obsurd and disappointing decision made by the leadership of NTC. As if Christians aren't persecuted enough as is, to dismiss a faithful staff member of a Catholic college, is shocking and upsetting. You would think a Catholic college would want the most faithful professors possible teaching the next generation, but I guess not. If this is the direction the college is going, it will never be a place I will support. |

As the parent of a young adult who was considering enrolling in the BA program, we now find ourselves discerning other options as a result of Dr Toppings dismissal (without cause) so quickly after Dr. Bradley’s appointment. It is very hard to consider a Catholic education at an institution that isn’t presided over by a faithful Catholic. Additionally, it was very disheartening to see the board move their meeting online in the face of a peaceful rally filled with beautiful Catholic families seeking transparency. |

I do not believe a non-Catholic should be in charge of a Catholic institution, especially one that involves a seminary. How can we ensure the purity of our faith in education if we put one in charge who does not share our beliefs?
Please, replace her with a devoted Catholic. |

Dr. Topping’s dismissal has lead to many in our Catholic community to question NTC’s integrity.
His vision for the B.A., his significant recruitment efforts & his commitment to fostering Catholic community, especially for young people will be greatly missed.
His work through NTC was far reaching, touching countless lives. What a devastating loss. |
