Good evening,
Over the past decade NTC has worked hard to restore its reputation as vital Catholic post secondary institution in the Archdiocese of Edmonton committed achieving its vision "To develop life-long disciples and ministers of Christ through the formation of minds and hearts" focused on its core mission "... committed to theological education and missionary discipleship. The college prepares laity, religious, and ordained ministers for Christian service and leadership in Western Canada and beyond." I grew up on the 80's and 90's when few people knew about NTC when it was not as successful in fostering theological education as it is now. I remember when few people attended and there was risk of closure. Today it is a vibrant, solidly Catholic, and focused a true Catholic education. The initiatives implemented by Dr. Topping - a new BA program, the Benedict XVI Institute for young students (and even older ones) to strength their Catholic formation, and I mean a truly strong Catholic formation, one that is needed to evangelize in an increasingly secular world. One that delves not just into what we believe but also the 'why' in social justice. It is seeing growth in young Catholics starved for tradition, seeking a truly Catholic education that has been and is sorely lacking in our current "Catholic" public education system (I deliberately put "Catholic" in quotation marks because schools that promote a secular culture (such as "pride" days) cease being a catholic school. Through Dr. Topping's (and I would argue Dr. West as well) work and leadership, a community of students, seminarians, lay men, lay women searching for like-minded friends was developing and growing (Adoremus, Credo). A strong Catholic community for those seeking relationships in a world increasingly individualistic and detached from each other. We were seeing strong traditional Catholic communities form and grow that lead to long lasting friendships and relationships that leads to solidly Catholic marriages and families. I fear that the actions and decisions taken by the current Board of Directors, most notably the hiring of a Protestant President who may not (or does not) understand Catholic teachings along with the firing of Dr. Topping based on accusations that were baseless , will reverse all the good work that NTC has done over the past decade or so. I fear these recent decisions will set NTC on a path that they may never recover from, which would be truly tragic and heartbreaking for our Archdiocese. That is the last thing i want to see, as we truly do need traditional Catholic institutions in our world today.
I pray that the Holy Spirit will bless the decision makers at Newman Theological College with understanding, grace, and humility to action the requests in this petition.
Thank you and may the peace of Christ be with you always. |

My husband and I have canceled our donation to our local parish, as we no longer want to have our money go towards Together we Serve and Newman. We will be looking for other causes to support instead. |

This must be taken seriously. I am Catholic youth from the area, and can strongly attest that Dr. Topping worked wonders for our community, and I have first had experienced his success. The college is nothing without him. |

Your greatest asset is the Faith that you place at the heart of your institution. If you start removing the people of faith fuel that( the lights of the world), you will find yourself becoming another shamed secular failure. |

The meeting was moved to a virtual meeting? I am interested to learn why that was so and if the board is hoping this peaceful protest eventually just goes away. |

My daughter is in her second year of the BA program at Newman. Dr. Topping has been instrumental in her formation as a young Catholic. He is solid in his teaching of the traditional Catholic faith and I am disappointed at the board’s decision to relieve him of his duties. Please not only reverse this decision but consider making him the permanent president of Newman. Under his leadership the Newman community of faithful and formed Catholic youth will continue to flourish and grow. Without his guidance, leadership and direction I fear the college is in trouble. |

For the handful of times I have met Dr. Topping, I can attest that he is a very kind and brilliant man who is passionate for people to grow in knowledge and holiness. It truly saddens me to know he had been dismissed without cause, especially since I had been considering to take part-time courses at NTC.
Until Dr. Topping is reinstated and the board is reformed, I will not be supporting NTC nor will I recommend it to any of my fellow Catholics. |

The sacking of Dr. Topping is an inscrutable and retrograde step for any authentically Catholic institution. Dr. Topping has transformed Newman and profoundly impacted the Edmonton Catholic community at large through Credo and his other faith based endeavours. His dismissal without cause is an affront to justice, a lance through the heart of Catholic education in Edmonton, and a black mark upon Newman Theological College. God grant that calmer heads prevail and redress this shameful decision.
