Because of the work of Dr. topping NTC has become a hub not just for students but for young adults all over Edmonton. This is work he should be congratulated for, there is no justification whatsoever for firing him. We want Newman to continue to be an institution that we can trust is faithfully Catholic. But that trust has been shaken by these actions. We need a Catholic president and we need to bring back Dr. topping; who will help young adults in Edmonton dive deeper into their faith. |

This is a catholic college and should remain that way lead by Catholic leaders. This saddens me when we need to stay strong as Catholics and uphold our faith. You start by replacing one leader by a non catholic and this only opens doors to continue. We need to stay strong to our catholic faith and never leave room for error . I pray God watches over us and protects us in this time of turmoil. |

Our Catholic Institutions ought to reflect the freedom and dignity with which we were created. It is the leader who shapes, forms and influences the character and ethos of its organization, and for this reason the head and leaders of Newman Theological College must be strong in the Catholic Faith. |

Your Excellency,
I write to you today with a heavy heart, deeply troubled by the recent dismissal of Dr. Topping as President of Newman Theological College and the appointment of Dr. Badley, who, as a non-Catholic, does not share the theological foundation that is integral to the identity of the institution. As an Orthodox Ukrainian Greek Catholic, I have long respected and admired Newman Theological College for its commitment to Catholic theology and its vision, which resonated strongly not only with Roman Catholics but also with those of us from the Eastern Catholic traditions.
This decision is particularly disheartening because Dr. Topping has, during his tenure, built a solid reputation for the college, making it a trusted place of formation for young Catholics, including my own sons, who I had hoped would one day attend. The direction this leadership change suggests casts doubt on the institution’s adherence to the rich theological heritage that has made it a beacon of orthodoxy in Canada.
It is with this concern that I respectfully urge you to reconsider the decision to dismiss Dr. Topping and to reinstate him as President. His leadership, vision, and unwavering commitment to the Catholic intellectual tradition have been a cornerstone of Newman Theological College’s success. To remove such a strong proponent of Catholic theology jeopardizes the very mission that has drawn so many faithful families, including my own, to consider it a primary choice for formation and education.
We need institutions like Newman Theological College to continue upholding the values and theological rigor that define authentic Catholic education. I urge you to reaffirm the college’s commitment to its Catholic identity, ensuring it remains a place where Catholic theology is taught, preserved, and lived. As it stands, with this current shift in leadership, I regret to say that I will no longer be able to send my children to an institution that appears to be moving away from these core values.
Please accept my deep disappointment in this matter, and I hope that you will seriously consider the impact this decision has on the broader Catholic community. An apology to Dr. Topping and a return to the college’s original vision would restore much-needed confidence in its future.
Yours sincerely,
Ryan Bolin

my friend and I are very distressed about Dr. Topping and his being fired. The non-catholic interim president has no right to do this, except by spite, which is not a good thing. |

To allow a non Catholic such influence in a Catholic institution is very puzzling and concerning. We live in a world that is so broken and we need real, Catholic leadership in our communities or they will simply not be Catholic anymore in anything but name. Please reconsider this decision and return to one that is in integrity with the Catholic Faith. Please bring the Holy Spirit and prayer into your leadership and listen.
Thank you for all that you do and God Bless. |

As a parent of you ng children I had hoped to send my children to NTC. Recent events jeopardize the long term growth of the college. The firing of Dr. Topping as well as capping the number of students in the BA program are short sighted. I wish NTC to be successful which is why I protest these changes. |
