1. The college must publicly apologize to Dr. Topping for the harm caused to his reputation and career.
2. Dr. Jo-Ann Badley will resign or be removed from her role as interim president. An interim role implies that it is meant to be a caretaker until a permanent appointment can be made. Instead, Dr. Badley has shown that she intends to shape the vision and culture of the college. As someone who does not endorse our Catholic faith, her direction as a leader is in conflict with the established vision and mission of NTC.
3. NTC should conduct a transparent investigation into how this decision was made in sharp conflict with the will of the community. This investigation should engage stakeholders including students, parents, community leaders, clergy, vocations directors, and bishops. If it is revealed that negligence, personal interest, ideology, or unjust animus played a role in this decision, guilty parties should be dismissed or consider resigning. |

May the grace of God guide us with holy wisdom to do what is right, just, and good. The firing of Mr. Topping was truly unjustified. Why was he fired? Please intervene in what truly is a mess. |

Most Reverend Archbishop Smith,
It is with deep sadness that I heard the news of the dismissal of Dr. Topping. Unless there is grave behaviour on the part of Dr. Topping that we are unaware of, then his dismissal is a grave intentional error that will have eternal consequnces for the Church and the souls that he would have positively influenced had his role continued. The Church in Canada is in desperate need of champions of the faith with heroic influence on the youth. Dr. Topping is such a leader. This action undermines any movement toward health in the Canadian Catholic Church. Please reconsider this decision and reinstate Dr. Topping. |

As lifelong lay faithful Catholics who’ve lived in the Prince Albert, Calgary, and now Edmonton Diocese. I have a firm living memory of the priests who came out of Newman in the 80’s with extremely liberal ideas centred around artificial birth control (some advised my own mother to do this, and that it was ok, and that Church teaching would be changing to accept it), and have seen many priest exit the priesthood to get married as they were ordained under the impression that they would be allowed to marry as priests (my own priest who gave me first communion was one of these).
All of the priests I just described were the direct result of a liberalized Newman Theological College, and there were very many faithful Catholics that welcomed its restructuring.
Now, in an extremely myopic move - an interim president who does not believe in our Catholic faith has been placed at the helm, and is steering the future of the college back in the opposite direction. We have few deliberately Catholic Institutions left that have been untainted in today’s culture - reverse this decision immediately - apologize, and own up to this injustice.
Until you prove that Newman is authentically Catholic, many Catholic families like our own will be boycotting sending our children (we have 5) to Newman in the future, and further, donations are being withheld to the annual bishops appeal. |

Respectfully, Archbishop Smith,
This seems like an unjust firing. With respect, I ask that you investigate this matter, and if anything untoward has occurred, please rectify it. A Protestant lead a Catholic college seems extremely unwise. |

The abrupt and out of place dismissal of Dr. Topping seemed to be exactly what the school stands against. For a man with a large family to be dismissed when he was doing his job how this school and community wanted it done, is not a good example of the Catholic Church. |

Dr. Topping is a Catholic gentleman, well educated and has made incalculable contributions to the Catholic community. He is the type of man we want to be forming our students and future priests. Unless he is restored to his position, both Newman Theological College and the Edmonton diocese will suffer great damage to their reputations and what's worse, the quality and education of our future priests will degrade further still. As you know, this has far reaching consequences.
May God reward you!

While I am not familiar with all the details of this action, I have heard many good things about Dr Toppng from eminent sources. Additionally, all things being equal, it seems obvious that a Catholic institution should be led by a Catholic, qualified and in good standing |

Dear Archbishop Smith,
Recent events at Newman Theological College (NTC) - specifically the untimely dismissal (without cause) of a renowned, high-profile faculty member by a non-Catholic interim president, have revealed a distressing lack of engagement with stakeholders and the broader Catholic community who wish to see NTC flourish as an authentically Catholic institution.
I humbly request that you intervene for the good of the college with the following commitments:
As someone who does not endorse our Catholic faith, her leadership direction conflicts with NTC's established vision and mission.
3. NTC should conduct a transparent investigation into how this decision was made in sharp conflict with the will of the community. This investigation should engage stakeholders, including students, parents, community leaders, clergy, vocations directors, and bishops. If it is revealed that negligence, personal interest, ideology, or unjust animus played a role in this decision, guilty parties should be dismissed or consider resigning. |

I pray, Bishop, that you be granted the graces to properly discern the next course of action regarding this situation. The turn of events are unfortunate, to say the least, and I hope by the special Jurisdiction granted unto you by our Lord, NTC will be justly restored. |

As someone who was planning to attend NTC for a Graduate Degree in Catholic Administration, this is extremely concerning. There may very well be legitimate reasons, but a lack of transparency does not present a spirit of good will. Given the recent history of clericalism and abuse, the Body of Christ cannot continue to be winded by it’s leaders. |

Unless he is restored to his position, both Newman Theological College and the Edmonton diocese will suffer great damage to their reputations and what's worse, the quality and education of our future priests will degrade further still. As you know, this has far reaching consequences. Please correct this terrible situation. |

With the way that things have been going over these past several years, we are dealing with dark times. No person should be wrongfully removed from a position without cause; it shows that someone else held covetous thoughts in their heart and mind. I urge you to follow through with the requests made above so that future generations might be able to experience a true vision of the Catholic beliefs, rather than a warped visage |
