Mr Declan Callbeck 630989@eics.ab.ca Dear Archbishop Smith, Recent events at Newman Theological College (NTC) - specifically the untimely dismissal (without cause) of a renowned, high profile faculty member by a non-Catholic interim president, have revealed a distressing lack of engagement with stakeholders and the broader Catholic community who wish to see NTC flourish as an authentically Catholic institution. I humbly request that you intervene for the good of the college with the following commitments: 1. The college must publicly apologize to Dr. Topping for the harm caused to his reputation and career. 2. Dr. Jo-Ann Badley will resign or be removed from her role as interim president. An interim role implies that it is meant to be a caretaker until a permanent appointment can be made. Instead, Dr. Badley has shown that she intends to shape the vision and culture of the college. As someone who does not endorse our Catholic faith, her direction as a leader is in conflict with the established vision and mission of NTC. 3. NTC should conduct a transparent investigation into how this decision was made in sharp conflict with the will of the community. This investigation should engage stakeholders including students, parents, community leaders, clergy, vocations directors, and bishops. If it is revealed that negligence, personal interest, ideology, or unjust animus played a role in this decision, guilty parties should be dismissed or consider resigning.

Mr Dan Baxter danbaxter9@gmail.com I know it may seem like a crazy idea, but maybe Catholic institutions should be lead by faithful Catholics in good standing with the Catholic Church. Yes

Miss Melanie Reid melsbell_2@hotmail.ca It is shameful to replace a wonderful Catholic father who is beloved by his students with someone who does not share our faith and vision. As Catholic students we deserve leaders who strengthen our communitiy. Yes

Miss Geneva Guinsatao genevaguin@gmail.com Transparency and fidelity to the Catholic mission should always be at the forefront of any decisions made by a Catholic institution. Therefore, I agree with the previous comments and hope that Newman Theological College works to address the concerns of the community and work towards restoring trust, ensuring that the college remains a stronghold of Catholic education and formation. Mr Xavier Villar xaviervillar03@gmail.com To preserve the faith that our forefathers have passed down to us, we ought to protect it. Prayer and good actions are the means by which we can successfully do this. Good actions without prayers are vain, as we all need the inspiration and the grace of God to do what is right, as St. Thomas Aquinas said, "grace perfects nature." All Catholics must grow in holiness and merit for both good people, so they may do more good, and bad people, so that they may be converted. Complaining and being angry about the absurdities we perceive around us will not solve this problem of evil, but only prayers and penances(or good actions). Thus, we must do our duties as Catholics to keep our faith intact, because, in the end, the only way we can get this problem over with is by growing in holiness in our personal lives. "All evils of the world are due to lukewarm Catholics." - Pope St. Pius V Yes

Mrs Jen Adria jenalu@gmail.com As a mother to 2 young girls, and another on the way, I am increasingly concerned with the diminishing options to educate my daughters in the Catholic faith and formation. The dismissal of Dr. Topping is yet another loss to their future. Please sincerely consider the gravity of this wrongful dismissal and the far reaching effects for families and youth earnestly seeking to provide opportunities to grow and learn in the faith. Yes

Mrs Chantal Isinger chantal.isinger@gmail.com Dr Topping is a wonderful, faith filled man who brought so much to this college. There needs to be a serious investigation into why he was let go and the motives behind it. Dr Topping absence will leave a huge void at Newman and has me second guessing the integrity of this college and if this is somewhere I would want to send my children. Our thoughts and prayers and with him and his family during this difficult time. Yes

Mrs Caterina Monai Brophy cmonaibrophy@gmail.com I was very saddened and shocked to hear of the dismissal of Dr Ryan Topping. His outstanding reputation and his immense contribution to Catholic teaching and formation of our seminarians, our future priests, should be applauded and appreciated. Why was he dismissed ? The Catholic community deserves to know. The lack of transparency raises many red flags and doubts in regards to the validity of this decision. I pray for all involved and especially for Dr Topping and his family. Yes
