I am sure that the board acted in what they believed to be the best interests of the College, but I think that they are perhaps unaware of the importance of the Catholic Studies Program and other initiatives that Dr. Topping started, and his key role in the College. Perhaps he rocked the boat in an institution that was too comfortable with the way things are or have always been. Perhaps the Holy Spirit is at work to bring a breath of fresh air through the person of Dr. Topping. In any case, one should not just "drop" such an influential person as this. Maybe there are other ways to accommodate him and his initiatives. He at least should be remain hired by the diocese in some sort of way in which his ideas and initiatives can continue.
