The dismissal of an upstanding and inspirational figure is both disheartening and worrisome. What does this communicate to the Catholic community at large, especially to families and potential students that take their faith seriously? As former student of Newman, the turn towards orthodoxy while Dr. Topping was employed was most encouraging as it was previously not an institution that I would have ever considered to send my children to further enrich their understanding of the faith. My experience with Newman before Dr. Topping was one where literally everything was tolerated-save for traditional liturgy, music, and theology. With the bizarre and unjustified ousting of Dr. Topping, my family will sadly have to reassess whether or not it is a viable place to send our children for their post secondary education.
