Dear Archbishop Smith, Recent events at Newman Theological College (NTC) - specifically the untimely dismissal (without cause) of a renowned, high-profile faculty member by a non-Catholic interim president, have revealed a distressing lack of engagement with stakeholders and the broader Catholic community who wish to see NTC flourish as an authentically Catholic institution. I humbly request that you intervene for the good of the college with the following commitments: 1. The college must publicly apologize to Dr. Topping for the harm caused to his reputation and career. 2. Dr. Jo-Ann Badley will resign or be removed from her role as interim president. An interim role implies that it is meant to be a caretaker until a permanent appointment can be made. Instead, Dr. Badley has shown that she intends to shape the vision and culture of the college. As someone who does not endorse our Catholic faith, her leadership direction conflicts with NTC's established vision and mission. 3. NTC should conduct a transparent investigation into how this decision was made in sharp conflict with the will of the community. This investigation should engage stakeholders, including students, parents, community leaders, clergy, vocations directors, and bishops. If it is revealed that negligence, personal interest, ideology, or unjust animus played a role in this decision, guilty parties should be dismissed or consider resigning.
