I am a parishioner at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. Dr. Topping has presented talks at our parish over the years. He is a breath of fresh air. He is a man of courage, faith, integrity. He revealed beautiful truths about our faith, history, church architecture and its beauty and meaning. We have bought his books and find in them clarity and boldness. His ability to draw the young and not so young in apparent in the fruits of his activities. Please investigate this decision and do not lead the flock into deception, which is swirling around this decision. With gratitude and prayer, Monica Kryska |

As a recent graduate of the BA in Catholic Studies program at NTC, I can confidently affirm that Dr. Topping's work at the college and through the Benedict XVI Institute has been instrumental in igniting a new passion for the Catholic faith, philosophical tradition, and Catholic culture among young people in Edmonton. His contributions have been invaluable. As such, the decision to fire Dr. Topping from his position at NTC was both unwise and highly detrimental to the flourishing of the Catholic faith in Edmonton, something which should be held as a priority.
Please consider seriously the requests outlined above.
Thank you. |

I am disappointed by NTC's continued silence and unwillingness to engage in any dialogue. I do hope this issue regarding the mysterious dismissal of Dr. Topping comes up in the college's next ATS accredidation review. It certainly deserves an investigation by a third party governing body. Perhaps letters to ATS are in order. |

I am sure that the board acted in what they believed to be the best interests of the College, but I think that they are perhaps unaware of the importance of the Catholic Studies Program and other initiatives that Dr. Topping started, and his key role in the College. Perhaps he rocked the boat in an institution that was too comfortable with the way things are or have always been. Perhaps the Holy Spirit is at work to bring a breath of fresh air through the person of Dr. Topping. In any case, one should not just "drop" such an influential person as this. Maybe there are other ways to accommodate him and his initiatives. He at least should be remain hired by the diocese in some sort of way in which his ideas and initiatives can continue. |

We would love to send our children to the college when they have completed their grade 12 education, provided it is authentically Catholic, has solid teaching rooted in the intellectual riches of the Catholic Church and a vibrant community that nourishes students in their faith journey as well as their everyday life. The presentation Dr. Topping shared last year on the college painted a beautiful mission, vision and hopes for more projects and initiatives our children would benefit from in the future, as well as the Catholic Church community as a whole. We are deeply concerned the direction of the college will shift with the departure of a key member who has brought about much of the college's growth. We see the fruits from the first class in our niece and other students, and hope the college will prayerfully reexamine its decision and its impact, addressing the people concerned respectfully and appropriately. |

Dr. Topping has become a heroic figure for my family and I and much of my catholic community in Saskatoon. His contribution to catholic culture and education in Western Canada is unmatched in recent decades. His dismissal from the college is inexcusable. |

The dismissal of an upstanding and inspirational figure is both disheartening and worrisome. What does this communicate to the Catholic community at large, especially to families and potential students that take their faith seriously? As former student of Newman, the turn towards orthodoxy while Dr. Topping was employed was most encouraging as it was previously not an institution that I would have ever considered to send my children to further enrich their understanding of the faith. My experience with Newman before Dr. Topping was one where literally everything was tolerated-save for traditional liturgy, music, and theology. With the bizarre and unjustified ousting of Dr. Topping, my family will sadly have to reassess whether or not it is a viable place to send our children for their post secondary education. |

The future of the world is Catholicism, and the future of Catholcism is tradition. NTC has historically been a bastion of far left liberalism that have called into question the orthodoxy of the institution. We have witnessed change for the better over the past decade and more and Dr. Topping has a large part to play in this success. There has to be a plan at NTC for more transparency and a focus on authentic Catholic leadership moving forward. |

The decision to dismiss Dr. Topping, though perhaps justified to those involved in the process, has seemingly failed to take into account the interests and concerns of the broader community whom Newman college is meant to serve. I waited on signing the petition to see if there would be further information that would help abate some of my concerns, but there has been very little in that regard that has been offered to those whom the decision heavily effects, which unfortunately has led many to draw their own conclusions. My own conclusion is that most of the faculty are out of touch with the community they're supposed to be serving, as they were afraid of those who protested (we are not a violent group!) and have reacted in ways that come across as immature in response to completely peaceful, truth-seeking concerns. Newman has not been the same place since Dr. Topping left. The enthusiasm is muted, the student body seems less united, and the college seems soulless. Dr. Topping brought Catholic culture to life, and embodied a joy and enthusiasm that raised us all to share in it. He appealed to all groups of Catholics, and helped us rationally find a way to reconcile our differences and get on the same page, being an example of this himself: when an issue of personal piety versus obedience to the bishop was brought to his attention, he changed his habits and followed the bishop, thus offering the challenge to us to rise above our pride in our own ways of doing things to instead have a rational discussion with a real desire to find the truth, and through this, be united with one another under our leaders. The other members of faculty do not appear to care much about us, because they did not consult us on any of their decisions, and seem to desire a more professional environment rather than a community environment that truly encourages an enthusiasm to learn. They have their own ways and opinions, and they have used their power to enforce them. At least, that's my read -- I have no other information to work with to see it any other way! I find it difficult to be in a philosophy class studying ideal political structures, but to be in a college where the structure is anything but ideal according to what I'm learning. I hope that the statement we got that the decision was backed by lots of prayer is true, because I'll admit, I don't know God's ways. |
